Every few months a UAP story breaks big, and the same cycle follows: breathless headlines, a counter-wave of debunking, and a public that ends up knowing slightly less than it did before. The problem is rarely the sighting itself. The problem is that our reporting habits mash together four categories that deserve to be kept apart.<\/p>\n
Data is what an instrument recorded: radar returns, infrared video, a photograph with intact metadata. Data can be misread, but it cannot be embarrassed into changing its answer. When a new claim arrives, the first question worth asking is boring on purpose: what sensor produced this, and what are its known failure modes?<\/p>\n
A surprising share of famous cases dissolve at this step: parallax, sensor glare, a lens artifact. The remainder become genuinely interesting precisely because they survived it.<\/p>\n
Eyewitness accounts matter, but they are evidence of what a person perceived, filtered through attention, memory, and expectation. Treating testimony as a recording is how honest witnesses get turned into either prophets or liars. Neither is fair, and neither is useful.<\/p>\n

Interpretations are healthy as long as they stay cheap: easy to propose, easy to abandon.
